  • National Cancer Control Foundation has organized activities of the World Day to combat smoking on 31/5/2008 under the banner of "the most expensive I have is my health" which included sports events on the marathon started from Aser area and ended at Al-Tahreer Square. Following to the marathon, a ceremony has been held and attended by Mr. Hamoud Obad, Minister of Youth and Sports. In his speech, he indicated the role of the Foundation in the definition and awareness of the dangers of the phenomenon of smoking and its serious diseases to health and waste of money. Also, he called for joint efforts and coordination between government bodies and civil society organizations to curb the spread of this dangerous and bad habit among young people.


    Professor Hassan Al-Kaboos, the financial adviser of the National Cancer Control Foundation, ensured the importance of expanding the role of the private sector to contribute in spreading awareness, concepts and attitudes that encourage young people to quit smoking and stay away from, and he pointed 29% of smokers aged between 14-24 years, depending on statistics. This shows the magnitude of the danger posed by this phenomenon on young people. Al-Kaboos showed the activities of the National Cancer Control Foundation in the care of cancer patients and facilitate the provision of services to all patients, as he said that the Foundation is seeking to open branches in all governorates.


    The Secretary General of the Local Council in the Capital, considered these events and activities are a right thing and to highlight the dangers of smoking and the need for distribution to government departments and educational institutions, schools, universities and the definition of phenomenon risks to youth.


    The Adviser to the Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Mohamed Hajar, browsed the role played by the Ministry of Health represented by the National Program to combat smoking in the Ministry through awareness activities and publicizing dangers of smoking.

     


    At the end of the ceremony, the Minister of Youth and Sports and the financial adviser of the National Cancer Control Foundation handed over the trophy and medals to the winners in the marathon and they inaugurated the opening of the tent that contained a photo exhibition, awareness brochures and charity dish profitable to cancer patients.

     

     

    It is noteworthy that the activities of the World Day to combat smoking contained cloth banners and radio & television seminars, in addition to distributing awareness brochures for the community.

    National Cancer Control Foundation

     

    National Cancer Control Foundation revived activities and events of the World Day to combat cancer on 4 February 2008. The Foundation organized television and radio symposium as well as it devoted and interviews to community ware of cancer risks and prevention. The Foundation put the signs and phrases on the streets in order to raise awareness and education. Dr. Afif Al-Nabihi, the Tumors Consultant, Chairman of the Scientific Council in the Foundation, said through Yemen Satellite Channel that all popular and official efforts must be concerted in order to combat cancer.

     

    The occasion of World Cancer Day, Mr. Ali Ahmed Al-Khawlani, General Manager of National Cancer Control, said in a television interview that the Foundation is preparing a national strategy to combat cancer at the country level to mobilize all efforts of officials and the relevant organizations in order to control cancer and reduce the incidence of the disease in the coming years. At end of his speaking, he called all traders, businessmen and the affluent dignitaries to support the Foundation to alleviate the suffering of the families of cancer patients.

    the National Campaign for early screening of oral cancer

     

     

    On Wednesday dated 30/4/2008, Judge Ahmed Abdullah Al-Hajri, Governor of Hodeidah and Head of the Local Council attended the inauguration ceremony of the National Campaign on national campaign to increase awareness for early scanning of oral cancer. This campaign sponsored by the National Cancer Control Foundation in cooperation with the Anti-oral Cancer Foundation, Hodeidah Charity Association and National Tumors Center.


    At the ceremony, the governor of the province, hailed the role of the Foundation in the fight against this fatal disease in the community calling all official institutions and the private sector to cooperate in the successful march of the Foundation for the Eradication of this disease. Also, he announced the provision of ground construction of the Model Center for the treatment of tumors in the governorate.

     

    Mr. Ahmed Jazem Saeed explained the considerable efforts of the Foundation for the treatment of cancer and the services provided by the Foundation and Al-Amal Unit that provides tests and medicines to patients. He added that cancer treatment would require concerted efforts and cooperation of all segments of society.

     

    Mr. Yahya Jazzar, Director of Al-Amal Unit, spoke about the services provided to patients and the incidence of oral cancer in Hodeidah particularly, which needs a serious hand from the related authorities.


    And Dr. Mervat Magali spoke about the seriousness of cancer and methods of treatment and the importance of awareness of the community on cancer causes.

     

    Dr. Ahmed Shamlan, Assistant Director of the National Tumors Center in Sana'a, showed a presentation of oral cancer cases and he spoke on the causes and remedies. He also reviewed the program of this campaign to increase awareness in the directorates of Hodeidah.

     

    The ceremony has been attended by the Secretary-General of the Local Council and the Director General of the Foundation and several of businessmen and legal persons and dignitaries.


    After the end of ceremony, the Director-General of the Foundation and the Medical Delegation of the campaign visited Al-Amal Unit and looked at the conduct of the Unit workers and the services provided to patients and assessed the Unit performance.

     

     

    Within effectiveness of the National Campaign to increase awareness for early screening of oral cancer, the fieldworks continuing
    in a number of Hodeidah directorates

     

     

    Fieldworks visits of the national campaign of are still continuing in order to awareness for early scanning of oral cancer in the province of Hodeidah where there were field visits to several districts (Al-Zaidiya, Hais, Al-Zahra, Al-Luhaya, Al-Moneera, Al-Qanawes, Al- Mansora, Al-Garahi, Zabid and Bait Al-Faqih).


    The medical team provided the initial tests and treatments in the early screening of oral cancer where almost 150 people (children, men and women) have benefited from this campaign as well as 100 residents of Al-Zaidiya district and 120 residents of Al-Luhaya district and 200 residents of Al-Muneera and Al-Qanawes districts.


    It is considerable that the National Cancer Control Foundation in collaboration with Oral Cancer Foundation and Al-Hodeidah Charity Association inaugurated the campaign by Mr. Ahmed Abdullah Al Hajri, governor of Hodeidah, and a number of political and social dignitaries, and specialists in this aspect.

     

     

    After the ceremony, the governor and his delegation visited Al-Amal Unit and observed the functioning of the unit and its services provided to patients and assessed the unit performance. This campaign was a result of the increased proportion of people living with mouth cancer.

    The Foundation launching awareness campaign of cancer risks

     

     

    The National Cancer Control Foundation launched its national campaign to definite cancer risks in Yemen through a press conference which included more than 50 journalists from various media (radio and television), in the presence of Mr. Ahmed Ahamati, undersecretary of the Ministry of Information and Mr. Hasan Al-Kabos, the financial adviser of the National Cancer Control Foundation and Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Hamed Salah, Director-General of Saudi German Hospital and Mr. Ali Ahmed Al-Khawlani, Director General of National Cancer Control Foundation and a number of specialists.

    It is noteworthy that the campaign which aimed to inform the public and decision-makers the magnitude of the problem faced by Yemen, as result of the proliferation of cancer patients, would start from March 5-30 and include many cultural and artistic events and activities.

    Women's sector in the Foundation organizing a preparatory meeting for the definition of the dangers of cancer

     

     

    Mr. Abdul Wasea Hayel Saeed, Chairman of the Board of Trustees in the Foundation welcomed at the beginning of his audience and pointed to the importance of the campaign in defining magnitude of the proliferation of cancer patients and methods of prevention as well as the causes of the disease from physical and psychological complications for patients.

     

    He added that the campaign aimed to draw the attention of international organizations and institutions on the scale of the tragedy by means of education and awareness and warning through the media. He also said that the campaign was a result of the increasing incidence of the disease to about 22,000 cases a year die from this number about 10,000 cases a year. He also stressed the serious efforts of public and private to combat this insidious disease and reduction. He reviewed at the end of his speech, some of the achievements of the Foundation since its founding in the fight against cancer and in its efforts in the establishment and the opening of a specialized center for tumors in Yemen in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population and the National Atomic Energy Commission as well as processing and opening many units and laboratories for treatment and diagnosis of tumors in a number of Yemen provinces.

     

    Then, Dr. Nafeesa Al-Jaifi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, indicated at her speech, this campaign is not the first campaign implemented by the National Cancer Control Foundation as it has already had many campaigns in defining dangers of cancer, and she stressed that the community support is a very importance. At the end of her speech, she called to the generous support for cancer patients and such support must be continuing and not seasonal.

     

    Mrs. Najeeba Haddad, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, indicated that the issue of cancer patients is one of the most difficult issues facing our Yemeni society particularly. She called to help cancer patients and stand with them to achieve their recovery. In addition, he added that cancer patients need to establish their own entertainment centers and provide comfort and stability for them. She also called all communities to do what they can to combat this dangerous disease.

     

    Dr. Yahya Al-Thawr, after he praised the efforts of the National Cancer Control Foundation, he presented a brief overview of tumors in the brain and the spread factors of this dangerous disease, and he indicated that a doctor specialized in this aspect receives 40 cases of which 30% patients with tumors.

     

    During the meeting, it has been showed all significant efforts of the National Cancer Control Foundation since it was founded to this year, also offered a song (ask about me) and the story of (Sami) who died because of this deadly disease.

     

    The kid Reem was a surprise in the meeting, she has spoken to all attendees about her suffering from cancer and how it wounded her and she thanked Allah for recovery of this dangerous disease. Also she sent a letter of thanks to the National Cancer Control Foundation for their great effort provided to her.

     

    It is noticeable that several prominent social and cultural and media attended this meeting which held through a press event in the launch of the first National Campaign to publicize the dangers of cancer that organized by the Foundation.
